Insider Focus: Crystal Mozart

Posted April 21st, 2017

Most cruisers would agree that Crystal is synonymous with luxury; and if it’s true that luxury is found in each detail, then Crystal's newest river ship—the Mozart—can confidently be touted as one of the most luxurious river cruise ships ever built. Nearly twice as wide as the standard river vessel, and, accordingly, with gorgeous public areas and well-appointed staterooms and suites, the Crystal Mozart provides an instant glorious feel that equals in service and quality to the experience aboard Crystal's two long-standing ocean vessels Serenity and Symphony.

As one of the top-selling travel agencies in the world, Cruise Insider was recently recognized by Crystal as a "Preferred Partner". As such, our company's President Ryan Hansen was invited to experience the laid-back luxury of this impressive ship as a guest at Crystal’s "Annual Awards Gala" held onboard the elegant Crystal Mozart. This exclusive gathering of Crystal Cruises' top partners allowed Ryan to enjoy and explore this incredible river vessel for a week, and now we're sharing Ryan's insider tips and his unique insight with you.

"We have a long history (40+ years) of building strong partnerships with luxury cruise lines and Crystal is one of our favorites. It was a tremendous honor not only to celebrate our partnership, but mutually recognize how we continue to offer our clients luxurious voyages and experiences of a lifetime with Crystal Cruises."—Ryan Hansen, President of Cruise Insider

The Ship Is Stylish

The only thing more stunning than the views from the deck are the ship's interiors. Every detail has been carefully planned and thought put into every space, including artwork crafted for each sitting area, a water-meets-light faux fireplace adding to the already elegant atmosphere, and even a living garden of herbs and plants that breathe "life" into the alfresco lounge space. Entertainment onboard includes several bars & lounges, a dance club, cigar bar, a theater and even a casino, each offering its own unique atmosphere and aesthetic. Exercising has never been cooler with a 360° wraparound promenade and complete fitness center complete with cardio machines, free weights, yoga mats, balance balls, and two TechnoGym resistance machines. Relaxation havens abound with a complete spa and salon offering manicures, pedicures, hair treatments, massage rooms, and seperate men's and women's changing rooms each with their own sauna and steam rooms.

Insider TipUnlike other river cruise lines, the indoor pool area is gorgeous, complete with a small pool, a hot tub, and a relaxation area full of padded loungers and rocking chairs that face the windows so you get a perfect panoramic view of the beautiful landscapes drifting by.

The Service Is Unmatched

Crystal is all about superior service, and personal attention is felt immediately the moment you step onboard. With 92 crew members taking care of just 154 passengers, Crystal's discreet approach to award-winning service means you may not notice them being acutely aware of your every need, but you'll certainly appreciate it. Six-star service is a hallmark of Crystal Cruises and is evident throughout the Mozart, from your personal Butler to the attentive waitstaff. Before you've even realized it, their expertly trained crew will add just the right amount of sugar and cream to your custom coffee or make sure the perfect ice cube is used for your favorite cocktail that's already waiting for you.

Insider TipMake sure you utilize the in-room Butler service to help make dining or shore excursion arrangements, for help unpacking and packing your luggage and to enjoy in-suite hors d'oeuvres & canapes or 24 hour room-service.

The Staterooms Are Impressive

All guests onboard are guaranteed the largest luxury suites of any river vessel in Europe, with 24-hour room service for utmost convenience and a wide range of magnificent accommodations—a total of 80 staterooms—in four different categories, each more impressive than the next. The in-room service is unmatched, the style is unmistakeable and the state-of-the-art advancements are everywhere including a Nespresso machine in each room, "motion-sensitive" Toto toilets, automatic mood lighting, and an iPad that lets you control the thermostat and television, order room service, and even submit special requests to your personal butler. Each cabin is appointed with fine linens and fabrics, luxurious toiletries and in-suite niceties that rival the world's top hotels.

Insider TipIf budget isn't an issue, stay in one of the highly coveted Crystal Suites, especially on longer voyages. These 883-square-foot accommodations are incredibly spacious and super luxurious, with two bedrooms and two en-suite bathrooms - the master with a double sink and full tub - plus separate living and dining areas, high tech gadgets galore, and even a marble LED fireplace.

The Cuisine Is Memorable

Five dining options are located onboard, double the average of most other river cruise ships. The food service is exceptional and all-inclusive meal options are designed to enhance culinary experiences from renowned chefs and specialty restaurants. In every venue, menu items take inspiration from the local cuisine, like delicious schnitzel in the Waterside Restaurant. The ship's culinary team sources fresh ingredients from purveyors within just a few hours of its ports-of-call. There's no dining schedule either; dinner is truly open seating allowing you to arrive at any time and stay as long as you'd like. The Mozart also boasts a standout wine list and top-shelf liquor throughout the ship and in every in-room minibar.

Insider TipDon't miss lunch at "Blue"; the 'Sacher Wurtzl’ is a fantastic, locally-inspired surprise and the Vienna Reuben Sandwich is an absolute must.

The Destinations Are Stunning

Generally regarded as one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, the Danube is the home of the Crystal Mozart and makes an ideal backdrop for this beautiful ship. Flowing past vineyards, castles and ruins, this magnificent river runs through Austria, Hungary and several other famed European destinations, and the Crystal Mozart is the ideal ship for exploring the dazzling Danube in absolute style and comfort. Highlights of this itinerary include the famed cities of Vienna and Budapest where the rich history of music, architecture, cuisine, and art seamlessly intertwine with modern Europe like the Danube itself.

Vienna is a highlight of this history-laden voyage, and where Ryan's voyage boarded on their way to the bustling city of Budapest. Home to famous artisans like Klimt, Schiele, and Kokoschka and the center of classical musicians Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss, history pervades every castle and city market in Vienna, and culture is everywhere, especially after the sun goes down.

"Take a sunset stroll through the old towns along the Danube, because that’s when cities truly come alive. The Crystal Mozart ‘overnights' in several ports—one of the best aspects of luxury river cruising—and something most ocean voyages don’t often do.”—Ryan Hansen, President of Cruise Insider

Budapest is one of Europe's most popular ports-of-call and marks the beginning or ending point for most Danube cruises (and the destination for Ryan's recent Crystal Awards Cruise.) Situated on opposite sides of the Danube, the cities of Buda and Pest united in the 19th century to form the Hungarian capital as we know it today. Each "side" is very different, but equally breathtaking. Buda retains much of its Middle Age charm with its rolling hills, cobbled streets and well preserved Gothic buildings, while on the other side of the river, Pest is the more modern, thriving city center.

Insider TipIf you're sailing the Danube, make sure to explore Durnstein, dominated by the ruins of Kuenringer Castle, where King Richard the Lion Heart was held prisoner . . . and definitely see Melk - home to the beautiful 18th-century Melk Abbey - with it's magnificent courtyard and terrace views. (On a clear day along the Danube, you can even see the breathtaking Austrian Alps!)

The Excursions Are Incredible

Most shore excursions on the Crystal Mozart are included and all offer unparalleled options for truly personalized discovery. Every voyage features a choice of at least two guided adventures featuring various options for all ages and activity levels—cultural, historical, food tours, wine tastings, and more—in every port, each led by a local English speaking guide, via luxury coaches with complimentary personal headsets. Passengers who feel like heading out solo can borrow one of 30 e-bikes, and there are even two Wider speedboats on board for special private tours. There are literally dozens of shore excursion options and opportunities to explore the gems along the Danube.

Insider TipThe highlights might be the two included signature excursions: one complimentary meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant, such as Le Ciel in Vienna or Tanti in Budapest, and an evening at Belvedere Palace for a guided tour and a private symphony performance of classical music in the Marble Hall.
